Hi, I'm Will. I like lasers.
I started LaserSpec Index because shopping for a laser is weirdly hard. Every “best laser engraver” list I found was a wall of affiliate links, half of them written by the brands themselves. Specs were buried in different units on different sites, and nobody would just say which one they'd actually buy.
So I built the thing I wanted: every machine worth considering, the same specs in the same format, charts that make the differences obvious, and a straight answer at the end.
The takes are mine. Sometimes I'll love a machine that scores lower on paper because of who it's for. Sometimes I'll tell you to skip a popular one. Either way, I'll show my reasoning so you can disagree with me.
Six scores. One Index.
Each machine gets six ratings out of 10. The Index is the weighted total out of 100. Weights favour what matters most to most buyers.
Straight from the source
Power, work area and speed come from manufacturer spec sheets, converted to the same units. If a number isn't published, I say so instead of guessing.
Street, not sticker
I list what you'd actually pay in the US on the day I checked, and note bundles and sales. Prices move constantly, so always confirm before you buy.
Spec review vs. hands-on
Every machine gets a spec review from published data, owner reports and independent reviews. Machines I've had on my own bench get a hands-on review, and I'll always tell you which is which.
Make something good? Send it over.
I'm always looking for machines, modules and accessories to put through real projects. A loaner or review unit turns a spec review into a full hands-on review.
A real hands-on review
Long-form, project-based testing on wood, acrylic, leather and metal, with photos of actual results, not renders.
Updated scores and takes
Hands-on time replaces the spec review across the Index, the charts, the compare tool and quiz results.
Long-term follow-ups
Firmware updates, new modules and how it holds up after months of use. Good machines get better reviews over time.
One ground rule: sending a machine doesn't buy a score. It gets you an honest one, based on real use. That's what makes it worth something to you and to readers.
